Dan Johnstone is the founder of SEMETROL. He holds several engineering degrees, and has worked in several defense and university laboratories, giving him the background and experience to develop the products available at SEMETROL. His educational preparation includes a BS in Ceramic Engineering from the University of Washington, BS in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University, MS in Electrical Engineering from U. Mass - Lowell, and PhD in Engineering Physics from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).

His laboratory experience started at Hanscom Air Force Base, growing InP by hydride vapor phase epitaxy, and establishing computer controlled photoluminescence and Hall mobility and carrier concentration measurements. Next, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, he took on the task of developing their DLTS system, implementing computer control, as well as variations such as constant capacitance DLTS and double pulse DLTS for spatial profiling. At AFIT, he designed and implemented two additional iterations of DLTS, improving the utility of each with each iteration.

At the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, he worked with contractors on developing radiation hardened electronics. After that, he was the Program Manager for basic research in Optoelectronic Materials at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. This provided ample opportunity to interact with more than 100 universities, companies and DoD labs on semiconductor crystal growth and the characterization methods on which they depend.

Following AFOSR, he went to Virginia Commonwealth University where he implemented several characterization methods, and a hydride vapor phase epitaxy system for GaN crystal growth. The characterization methods included DLTS and variations, C-V, IVT, PC, and TAS, used extensively in developing GaN, ZnO, and SiC materials.
